Independence Day

Who executes justice for the oppressed, Who gives food to the hungry.  The LORD gives freedom to the prisoners. Psalms 146:7 (NKJV)

It is an amazing privilege to be free.  The ability to freely choose is a gift from God, and one mankind continues to attempt to suppress.  I’ve said it before but it bears repeating – Freedom isn’t free.  It comes at a great cost and many have fought valiantly for our right to be free.

In the vast variation of freedoms fought for throughout the world there is none greater than what was provided for us upon the Cross of Calvary by Jesus Christ.  Through the sacrifice of His life every human being was given a chance to be free from the bondage of sin. This freedom came at a very high cost and must be received as a gift by those who intend to possess and experience it.  It must not be squandered or taken for granted, but embraced and shared with others.  Most importantly, once freed we must not walk back into the sinful ways once enslaving us.

Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. Galatians 5:1 (NKJV)

Along with being freed from the yoke of slavery we have been given freedom in our lifestyle.  We no longer have to live attempting to keep a set of laws to be saved – we can now know with confidence we are saved because of what Jesus did on the cross.  We can realize this but then be tempted to decide to use this freedom to live in whichever way we feel.  But God’s gift of freedom should never be used as a book full of blank checks to be written on Jesus’ account.

For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men— as free, yet not using liberty as a cloak for vice, but as bondservants of God. 1Peter 2:15-16 (NKJV)

I want to encourage you today to meditate upon these things today.  Let’s choose to walk in the freedom given to us by our Lord.  Let’s walk in a way worthy of His payment.  As our Nation celebrates Independence Day and the sacrifice so many men and women have made, let’s also share what Jesus has done for our freedom.

STUDY QUESTION: According to the Scriptures contained in this devotional, what can we learn with respect to our freedom?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you walking in freedom or continuing to walk in bondage to sin?

APPLICATION: Let’s seek the Lord today and thank Him for our freedom from the bondage of sin.  Let’s choose to walk in newness of life.

Father, Thank You for Your gift of Jesus to all of us.  We choose to accept this gift and I acknowledge His ultimate sacrifice.  Father, we pray a blessing for every family member who has lost a loved one in the fight for freedom.  May they find comfort in You today and may we always remember the cost of this freedom.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
