I Am The Way

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." John 14:6 (NKJV)

I think one of the biggest points of controversy when sharing our faith with others is when we let them know there is only one Way to be forgiven from their sin, and to be with God in heaven—the one Way being through their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.  This is exactly what happened in the early church, as Jesus’ followers shared, “The Way.” The Way referred to the Gospel message (Good News) of Jesus Christ and is what Christianity was called at that time.

And about that time there arose a great commotion about the Way. Acts 19:23 (NKJV)

Some will say Jesus being the only “way” represents a narrow way of thinking, and that we, as Born-Again Christians, are way too narrow-minded in this type of belief.  I would say this, if we are narrow-minded because we believe God’s teachings about Jesus being the narrow gate to enter into His presence, then so be it.  I do not mean this to be crass or rude, but I will not refute the truth, nor will I deny God’s provision for access to Him simply to appease another person. In fact, my love for these very people dictates my sharing this truth with them.

The first thing we can look at to substantiate the truth is God’s Word – The Bible.  And here in the Book of John is where we see Jesus Himself declaring God’s truth about the “the way.”  So for those who bring you another message saying Jesus is not the only way or there is something else one must do or add to attain their salvation, do not believe them because it is a lie from the enemy!

God kept the gospel message simple—so simple a child could understand.  For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16).  If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.  For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation (Rom. 10:9-10).  Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12).

As simple as God has made it, Satan has spent the last two thousand years trying to either complicate or counterfeit it through various so-called religious beliefs.  One such lie woven through the many churches around the world is God accepts us because of the good things we have done, meaning we do more good than bad—salvation by works.  But we can see the Apostle Paul refuting this lie in his letter to the Church of Ephesus.

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. Eph. 2:8-9 (NKJV)

Jesus laid down His life so we can be reconciled unto God.  As He was being crucified upon the cross He said, “It is finished!”  He had satisfied the demands of His Father's justice.  He had accomplished every prophecy about the Messiah.  He had provided the way for all who would put their faith in Him.  Nothing more must be added to what He has done!

STUDY QUESTION: According to John 14:6, what does Jesus say about coming into the presence of the Father (God).

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Have you found yourself confronted with those who subscribe different ways to salvation?  Have you been tempted to think, “Well, maybe there is another way?”

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Make it your heart's desire to stay in the Word, and prepare yourself. We need to know the scriptures - it may mean the difference of life and death for those we share with who have been contaminated with lies.

PRAYER: Father, thank You for keeping the gospel message simple for us. Lord help me to share this great blessing with others…In Jesus’ name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
