Light of The World

Light of The World
For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light Ephesians 5:8 (NIV)
I dont know about you, but I think that we take light for granted. We always have it, except for the few times that we have a blackout due to electricity overloads. And I dont really think that we put much thought into it each time we flip a switch and can instantly see. I think that were probably complacently spoiled and to a certain extent, jaded to having it.
But, take a walk down a dark alley in an unfamiliar part of town, and you will be wishing it were light outside for sure. Light gives us some sort of security as if it would keep us safer. And in actuality, it does. Statistics show that homes that are outfitted with even modest outside lighting, suffer less vandalism and detour theft.
So what does light and darkness have to do with our walk with God?
Biblically speaking, as Christians, we ourselves, were once darkness before we confessed Jesus as Lord and savior. Notice the scriptures dont say that we were in darkness, but that we were darkness. Oh sure, we did things that were dark, and that were in darkness, but they were just a reflection of who we really were. The scriptures go on to say that we are now light, in the Lord.
What does that mean, that we are light in the Lord?
Well, it means that we have union with Jesus and His light. And because of this, we become light ourselves. He is the source, and we reflect it. It is as if we are the moon, and He is the sun (son), and the only time that light is hidden from us, is when this world, or should I say the things of this world, come between Him and us. When this happens, we have a shadow of fleshly desires and sin that will block the spiritual light that should be coming from us. When we keep our eyes fixed upon Him instead of the cares of this world, we find that we will continuously reflect His light.
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. John 8:12 (NIV)
I thank God that has qualified us as Christians, to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. Because He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness, and brought us into the kingdom of the Son He loves (see Col. 1:12,13).
So what do we do with this light? We should be shining on everyone including those who are still darkness. We have not been made light just to go and become reclusive in hiding. Jesus tells us this in Matthew.
You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Matthew 5:14 (NKJV)
So we have God the Holy Spirit living inside of us, shining on those around us. He shines much brighter than any city on any hill. So we need to make sure this light is properly used to lead others to Christ. And we must be careful not to use it as a spotlight on fellow believers to scrutinize and pick at their flaws. The light of God will shine from us naturally as we walk daily with Him. And it will expose any sin for what it is by merely shining on its own.
Maybe you have experienced various people choosing not to associate with you, or have even had friendships that seemed to change once you professed to follow Christ, and live for Him. This can happen as you choose to live for the Lord, and others choose to continue to live as darkness.
The more you lay your life down for God, seek Him and choose to make choices that reflect His ways, the more you will be unwilling to compromise and participate in those ways that are in direct contrast. And in doing so, your light will shine brightly.
As this happens, others that are living according to the flesh will see this, and it will expose their sinful ways to their conscious thinking, which will result in conviction from the Holy Spirit. This will be a pivotal time for them as they choose to continue in this way of life, or repent and call upon the Lord for forgiveness. This will happen in both believers and non-believers alike.
Were to love everyone as Christ loved us. And there is no better way in showing our love, then to hold fast to the ways of the Lord, refusing to compromise with worldly trends. And thats how were to be a light unto a dark world.
STUDY QUESTION: According to John 8:12, how can we be light?
PERSONAL INVENTORY: Have you experienced others staying away from you during times where you have focused strongly on your walk with God?
APPLICATION: Dont sell out for any friendship that requires you to compromise your walk with Jesus. Be a true friend and hold fast to the Word of God. Love and pray continuously for those in your life that are caught in the snare of sin.
Father, Thank You for allowing me to join with You and become light instead of darkness. Help me to shine brightly on those You have placed within my life. Help me to continue to love those who are still darkness or have gone back to walking in darkness, and to not judge them. I pray that You would remind me to keep them in my prayers. In Jesus precious name, amen&
