The Holy Spirit - Part I

"For John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” Acts 1:5 (NKJV)

One of the distinguishing beliefs of the Christian faith is the Trinity.  The word Trinity is used to describe the unique relationship of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

Jesus’ death upon the cross was a divine plan, as was His resurrection and His ascension to Heaven where He sits at the right hand of the Father (Matthew 22:44).  But before He left He promised His disciples that His Father would send another Helper—this helper would be identical to Jesus in every essence, because it would be God (Jesus) in Spirit and He would be spiritually present everywhere at once through the Holy Spirit, including dwelling within every believer (John 14:16-18; John 15:5).

Q:         So what are some of the benefits we share by having the Holy Spirit abide with us?

·      He gives us spiritual gifts so that we can minister to others (Romans 12:6-8)

·      He Guides us to know His truth (John 16:13)

·      He Reminds us of Jesus’ words (John 14:26)

·      He Give us the right words to say (John 3:34)

·      He fills us with power (Rom. 15:13; Acts 1:4-5, 8)

·      He abides with us forever and comforts us (John 14-16)

We receive the Holy Spirit (are baptized with Him) when we receive Jesus Christ.  But we need to understand the baptism of the Holy Spirit in light of His total work in us as Christians.  In Part I of this study we will look at the first of three things that clarify this.

1.         The Spirit marks the beginning of the Christian experience.  We cannot belong to Christ without His Spirit.

But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. Romans 8:9 (NKJV)

It is important for us to understand, we cannot be united to Christ without His Spirit.

But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him. 1 Corinthians 6:17 (NKJV)

We can clearly see from scripture we cannot be in the body of Christ except by baptism in the Spirit.

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. Romans 8:14-17 (NKJV)

So without the baptism of the Holy Spirit there is no conversion, and no relationship with God the Father, or God the Son, and this means no salvation.  These are basic Biblical truths we as Christians should all know, and be able to share.

STUDY QUESTION: What does Romans 8:9 say about those who have not received the Spirit of God through being born again?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Do you see the difference of being born again, and accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior versus simply attending church or saying you believe in God?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Allow God to lead you in your walk as a Christian.  Don’t just meander through life wondering what is next.  Be a part of God’s ministry and allow the Spirit of God to work within your life and the lives of those around you.  Romans 8:14-17 tells us we are Sons of God if we allow this in our lives.

MAKE THIS YOUR PRAYER TODAY: Father, thank You for the baptism of Your Holy Spirit.  Lead me in all I do this day — fill me and empower me to do the things You have called me to do.  May I bring honor and glory to Your name.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
