A New Path

Then Herod, when he had secretly called the wise men, determined from them what time the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the young Child, and when you have found Him, bring back word to me, that I may come and worship Him also.” Then, being divinely warned in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed for their own country another way. Matthew 2:7-8,11-12 (NKJV)

King Herod had told the wise men to come and tell him once they had found this child who was to be the Messiah.   Even though Herod had told them he wanted to worship the child, he secretly planned to kill the young boy.  God led them to Jesus by way of a star in the sky.  After they had found Jesus in His home with Mary, God visited them that very night in a dream and warned them not to go back to Herod — they were to take another route back to their own country (Mt. 2:12).

After reading this story I couldn’t help but draw some parallels with respect to how God guides us right to His Son Jesus as well, just as He did with the wise men.  It might not have been a star from the east leading us to Him, but He led us nonetheless — In fact we’re told no one comes to Jesus unless God draws them (John 6:44).

No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day. John 6:44 (NKJV)

I can find another similarity in this story as well with respect to us as Christian men and women.  God warned the wise men not to go back the way they had come from because He had a different path for them.  Once God has led us to the Lord and we experience His presence in our lives, we will find God has a new path for us to travel as well, and this is because He doesn’t want us to go back to the path we once walked, or for us to participate in the deadly sin once enslaving us. We are no longer to be identified with the old self, including the old sinful ways of doing things, which means we need to change our ways.

Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:12-16 (NKJV)

So, just as it was with the Magi, we need to take a different path once we have come to know Jesus.  We need to walk in a righteous and Christ-like way.  And we do this by reading His Word and applying it to our lives through the power of the Holy Spirit.  It is by His power, and not by our might that we are able to do this (cf. Zech. 4:6).

I want to encourage you today to remember you are God’s child and He has a perfect plan and path for your life.  Let’s not look back at our sinful past with longing eyes as if we miss those times.  Let’s look forward to the new and exciting life our Lord has planned.

STUDY QUESTION: What does 1 Peter 1:12-16 tell us about our former life before salvation?  What does it tell us about how we are to live once we have the knowledge of God’s grace upon our life?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Can you identify any sinful habits in your life today?  Are you willing to lay them down and turn from them?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Ask God for the power to walk in newness of life.

LET’S MAKE THIS OUR PRAYER TODAY: Father, thank You for the lessons of the Magi in Your Word.  I have made the commitment to go in a different path from whence I came.  Continue to guide this path, and keep me from straying.  Write Your Word upon my heart and upon my mind, so I may remember in times when I am being tempted.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
