Worshiping — The Creator or The Creation

Look, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: She and her daughter had pride, fullness of food, and abundance of idleness; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. And they were haughty and committed abomination before Me; therefore I took them away as I saw fit. Ezekiel 16:49-50 (NKJV)

When I think about wicked societies, there are few that come to mind surpassing Sodom.  We are told within scripture, the people of Sodom were an abomination unto the Lord.  Pride and an unwillingness to help those in need were commonplace, but their sexual sins are what finally brought about the wrath of God and their ultimate destruction.  Homosexuality was so prevalent it was no longer the exception, but had become the rule, so to speak.

So how did the people of Sodom reach this state of depravity?  It came to pass because of their willful disobedience towards the One who created them. We can see how this happens in the first chapter of the Book of Romans, as we are given an outline of how a person or an entire society can spiral downward when they have decided not to acknowledge and surrender their lives to God.

There are some people who deny believing in God, but Scripture clearly tells us how God has revealed Himself to everyone through creation, so they are without excuse (Rom. 1:28-32).  And yet some people will still choose to suppress the truth of God in unrighteousness.  Instead of glorifying God and being thankful to Him, they become futile in their thoughts and their foolish hearts are darkened — professing to be wise, they become fools.

The result of this ongoing willful disobedience against God is these foolish people will end up worshipping the creation rather than the Creator.  It may be they worship other human beings, or something else, such as a job, a hobby, animals, or nature, but they will find something to worship, and therefore they will give those things the greatest place within their heart, instead of giving this spot rightfully to God.  We can see the result of God giving them over to their own vile passions and perversions in the following Scriptures.

And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them. Romans 1:28-32 (NKJV)

I want to encourage you to think and pray upon these things today.  Don’t give someone, or something the rightful place God deserves within your heart.  Choose to worship the One who created you for His enjoyment and pleasure.  Guard yourself against willfully disobeying God’s will for your life.

STUDY QUESTION: According to the Scriptures contained within this devotional, what is the result of willful disobedience against God?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Is there any area in your life where you are being willfully disobedient to the Lord?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Choose to surrender your life fully to the Lord and seek His perfect will for your life.

PRAYER: Father, thank You for loving me. Thank You for creating me uniquely and perfectly.  Father, forgive me of any area where I have been willfully disobedient and help me to see any area where I am not in Your will. In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Blessings upon your day, Scott
