Connected By The Cross

Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation…He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together. Colossians 1:15-17(NLT)

We’re told that the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing (1 Cor. 1:18).  To them, the thought of God coming to earth and becoming fully man so He could shed His blood and give His life as a ransom to satisfy their debt of sin is absolutely absurd.  In their hardened hearts they cannot receive the power of the cross. They cannot accept the message of how the cross glues us to our Creator.

And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Philippians 2:8 (NKJV)

Many professed unbelievers choose to try to hide behind science, stating they believe in science and not fables about God. God knew there would be people with this attitude and I believe He decided to meet them in the scientific arena so He could show them the power of the cross.

We are told in Ephesians 4:14-16 God has knitted our spiritual bodies together as one so that we might be unified. Different members working together as “One Body.” He has done this in the same way He knitted our human bodies together with amazing detail and wonder.

Q: So, just how did God connect the pieces of our physical body, and what did He use for the attaching, or the glue?

He did this with laminin.  Laminin are a family of proteins that are an integral part of the structural scaffolding of basement membranes in almost every animal tissue.  Okay, in simple terms, laminin are what hold us together.... LITERALLY. They are cell adhesion molecules. They are what hold one cell of our bodies to the next cell. Without them, we would literally fall apart.  They are what I like to call, “God’s glue.”  It is interesting to me how the glue responsible for holding us together is in the shape of the cross.

Jesus made these things — In fact, everything was created through Him and for Him. He existed before anything else, and He holds “all creation” together (Col. 1:15-17).  And He has chosen the cross of laminin to hold us together in our fleshly bodies, and once we have placed our faith in Jesus He will use the cross of Calvary as a sort of spiritual laminin to connect us together with the other members of the body of Christ.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Colossians 1:17, what are “all things” held together in?

PERSONAL INVENTORY:  Can you see the divine message of the cross within our lives, even as science discovers the make-up of our bodies?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Are you allowing God to knit you together as an integral part of the body of Christ?  Are you willing to allow Him to use you where He wants to use you at?

PRAYER: Father, thank You for the Cross. Thank You for what has been done upon it, and how it affects our lives as believers in Your Son Jesus.  Use me today as you continue to join me with other believers to make up Your new body, the church.  May I be useable and moldable today as I seek to glorify Your Son.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Blessings upon your day, Scott
