He Created The Angels

God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. Hebrews 1:1-4 (NKJV)

There are many people who are infatuated with angels. They see them as something to be worshipped, and some would even believe that they are greater than Jesus, but this is not true according to Scripture. The writer of Hebrews addresses this very subject in the first portion of his letter, when he wrote about Jesus having become so much better than the angels, stating that He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they (Heb. 1:4).

Angels are very important, but they are still only servants under God.  On the other hand, Jesus is called “Son of God” (Heb. 1:1), a title never given to an angel.  Colossians tells us, it is Jesus — not an angel — who has delivered us from the power of darkness (Including fallen angels).  And it is only through the blood of Jesus that we have redemption, and the forgiveness of sins.  It is only Jesus who has been declared to be the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.  And by Jesus “all things” were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones and dominions or principalities (angels) or powers (Col. 1:13-16).

It is important for us to understand that God has a divine purpose for creating angels.  We can clearly see in the Old Testament that angels were used to do many things, from delivering a message to destroying the entire Assyrian army in one night (2 Kings 19:35).  We see they were the ones chosen to announce the birth of Jesus (Luke 2:8-14), and to sing songs of worship in the throne room of heaven (Rev. 5:11-12).  But it is equally important to know that they were simply creations, and Jesus is their creator — they were never to be worshipped (Col. 2:18; Rev. 22:9). Angels were actually created to worship God, but they are also here to help and protect those who are saved in Christ Jesus.

But to which of the angels has He ever said: “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool”? Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation? Hebrews 1:13-14 (NKJV)

I want to encourage you to think and pray upon these things today.

STUDY QUESTION: According to the Scriptures contained within this devotional, what can we learn about Jesus, and the angels He has created?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Does Jesus have a greater place within your heart than any of His creations?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Choose to give Jesus the place He rightfully deserves within your heart.

PRAYER FOR TODAY: Father, thank You for Your Word, and for showing me Your truth. Help me to see the lies of the enemy clearly, and soften my heart in any area where I have become hardened to the truth.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Blessings upon your day, Scott
