4 Essentials To Spiritual Growth — Part 1

But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”  Matthew 4:4 (NKJV)

There are millions of people who hear and receive the Gospel message each and every year and as a result they make a profession of faith in Jesus Christ.  Unfortunately, many new believers will not evolve in their Christian walk, or spiritual maturity. The reason being they are usually left without any real help, or any discipleship to foster their new relationship with their Lord.

The truth is we all need to be doing certain things if we are going to evolve and be transformed to be more like Jesus, which is what should be happening each and every day.  With this said, I wanted to share four essential things that each of us need to implement into our lives to promote spiritual growth as believers.  The first essential is—

1. We need to read our Bible daily

It is absolutely essential for us to be prayerfully reading God’s word, and to give time to studying it.  God has given us His word to guide, teach and communicate His perfect will for our lives.

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16 (NKJV)

Parent’s are to teach God’s Word to their families (Deut. 7:6-7), and husbands are commanded to love their wives, just as Christ also loved the church by sanctifying and cleansing her with the washing of the water by the “Word” (Eph 5:25-26). If we are to see tremendous growth in our spiritual walk, it will be because we prayerfully read the Bible.

Conversely, we will see significant spiritual atrophy when we abstain from reading our Bibles daily.  The key is to pray before you read, and to ask the Lord to teach and show you what He wants you to know and apply to your life.  Knowing Scripture will prepare you for answering the many tough questions you’ll face in life, and it will equip you for living righteously, as it exposes the lies of the enemy (cf. John 8:44).

I want to encourage you to think and pray upon these truths today.

STUDY QUESTION: What does Jesus say about the Word of God, as outlined in Matthew 4:4?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you reading your Bible daily?  Are you applying what you are learning?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Prayerfully read and apply God’s Word to your life.

PRAYER FOR TODAY: Father, thank You for Your Word. Thank You for allowing me to learn and to be guided by it. Teach me today as I prayerfully read Your word. In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
