Spiritually Plugged Up

For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away! 2Timothy 3:2-5 (NKJV)

I don’t know about you, but every time spring arrives it brings forth the allergy season in my life.  My sinuses go crazy as pollen now fills the air I breathe.  I used to think it was a spring cold, but eventually found out I was like millions of other people who suffer from allergies.  I think the worst part of allergies is when the very corridors within my nasal passage enabling me to breathe become obstructed and plugged up. It actually makes me feel claustrophobic!

I think this same sort of thing can happen in our spiritual walk, as Christian men and women. Let me explain.  Our body is a vessel of God, and it was designed to bring honor and glory to Him in everything we do. When we sin, the Spirit is grieved, and it causes us to become all plugged up spiritually. The power and abilities once available to us through the Holy Spirit have been quenched.  We are told not to do this (Eph. 4:30; 1Thess. 5:19).

Thankfully, God has provided a way for us clear out these spiritual obstructions caused by our sin, and this is for us to confess (Come in agreement with God about) our sin, and then to repent (Change our mind), which will lead us in a proper direction. Once we have come to God through Jesus to confess and repent of our sin, we are forgiven, and the power of the Holy Spirit is restored.

Unfortunately there are many people, who are not willing to rid themselves of the sinful things responsible for keeping them spiritually plugged up in their Christian walk. They may have a form of godliness, but they are denying His power to transform their lives (2Tim. 3:5).  It could be they never really wanted God to change them — it could be they really only wanted the guarantee of salvation.  But this is not true Lordship, and it certainly isn’t true Christianity.

“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you…” Acts 1:8 (NKJV)

The way I see it, we are not to pick and choose when and how God’s power is used in our life. It should be His choice to do amazing things through us when He chooses, not just when we say it’s okay or we feel like it.  This is what it means for Him to be Lord or our lives.

I want to encourage you today to ask the LORD, “Father, is there any sin in my life causing a power outage in my walk.”  Once you have allowed Him to clean out these areas, now relinquish all your personal rights to refrain from being used by God in whatever capacity He chooses.  Guard yourself from merely having an outward appearance of God in your life – Choose to have the power of God flowing through your life.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Acts 1:8, what did Jesus promise us as His followers?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Can you see the power of God being manifested in your life?  Are you allowing God to use you in whatever capacity He desires, or are you setting limits?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Let’s seek the Lord daily – asking for a fresh filling of His Holy Spirit.  Now ask God to use you mightily.

PRAYER FOR TODAY: Father, Thank You for giving me the Holy Spirit.  Thank You for allowing me to have amazing power through You.  Help me to see the opportunities and responsibilities You have laid before me. Help me to yield to Your will for my life. In Jesus’ precious name, amen…
