His Perfect Timing

To everything there isa season, A time for every purpose under heaven…Eccl. 3:1 (NKJV)

I remember when I first began to write devotionals about 14-years ago.  The Lord had prompted me to write and to send them out, but I didn’t know where they were to go.  So I asked the Lord.  As I went through my contact list, there were 56-names that I chose to start the original mailing list.  I truly believe the Lord’s hand was in this selection process, as there were some people on this list that I wouldn’t have probably put on it, or at least they would not have been one of the first 56-names that came to mind .  It was God’s list though, and it was His perfect timing for these devotionals to go to them.

I remember getting up around 4:00am and sitting down to write.  I would ask God, “What do you want me to write?”and I would sit and wait for Him to direct me.  I remember there were some days where I simply couldn’t think straight, or even began to determine what I was supposed to write about. So I would ask God, “Are you going to give me something, because I don’t have much time left here?”  There were times when I still wouldn’t get anything, and I would think to myself, “I’m not going to do this anymore if You don’t give me anything to write…”

I didn’t realize it at the time, but God was teaching me many things.  He was teaching me patience, endurance, and even stretching my faith, but most importantly, He was teaching me that His timing was just that — His timing.  I learned to begin writing at different times of the day, and would then have the devotionals done in advance.  I learned to take what He gave me, when He gave it to me, and to act upon it at this precise time.  I found if I simply scratched down the idea and kept it for later, it somehow was lost or at least it wasn’t accessible.

As I read God’s Word, I can clearly see where His timing has always been perfect — especially when others thought He was late.  I’ve grown to love His timing, because it is always for my best, even if I don’t see it at the time, or if it ushers in a new test or trial.  In essence, it’s really all about His Lordship of my life, and my trusting in Him in every aspect of it.

I’ll bet if you look back at some of your greatest trials and tests, you will see how God is using them to shape you, along with those who are in your life.  Even in those times where we bring on our own troubles by making foolish choices, God is faithful to use them for good if we are truly His children.

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to Hispurpose. Rom. 8:28 (NKJV)

So how can be assured if it is God’s timing or ours?

I believe we need to bring every decision to The Lord in prayer — earnestly seeking Him to guide us, and to show us His will and timing. And we need to be asking Him to either close the door, or open it when His timing is right (cf. Rev. 3:7).  We might not get an answer when we want it, and we might not even get the answer we wanted, but it will be His will, and we can be confident He will guide our path perfectly if we simply choose from being wise in our own eyes.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. Do not be wise in your own eyes…Prov. 3:5-7 (NKJV)

STUDY QUESTION: According to the Scriptures contained within this devotional, what can we learn about God’s ways, and timing? ??

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you allowing God to direct your path and perfect timing, or are you trying to figure things out on your own, based on what you want? ??

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Seek the Lord to guide you in His path and in His timing on everything you do.  ??

PRAYER FOR TODAY: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your perfect timing and leading in my life.  Help me to lean not upon my own understanding, but to seek You in everything I do.  Help me to learn to be patient and to wait upon Your perfect timing as well.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…
