The Cost of Freedom

They shall utter the memory of Your great goodness, And shall sing of Your righteousness. Psalms 145:7(NKJV)

I love Memorial Day. I love what it stands for. It is a time for us to stop, remember, and pay tribute to those in the military service who have fought bravely and lost their lives while serving.   Many men and women have paid the ultimate price by sacrificing their lives so we can be free.  I often wonder how many people even understand what they are celebrating this day for.  I wonder how many have truly counted the cost for their freedom.

I can find myself wondering the same thing when it comes to being saved.  When you think about it, we should be celebrating a spiritual memorial day each and every day of our lives as Christian believers. Perhaps we should start our day remembering how Jesus Christ died upon the cross for us so we could be free—free from the bondage of sin.

I think it’s important for us to count the cost of the freedom we have been provided, both physically and spiritually.  These freedoms have come at a tremendous cost and we should never take them for granted.  As Christians we need to ask ourselves if we are experiencing the freedom Christ intended for us to have.

Q:         Am I living as if I have been freed from the bondage of sin, or am I returning to the bondage of sin?

Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. Galatians 5:1 (NKJV)

I want to encourage you this Memorial Day to stop and think about what it means to be free.  I want to encourage you to walk in this freedom — both physically and spiritually — and to never take it for granted.  When we celebrate Memorial Day and we are remembering all those who have fought and died for the freedom we are enjoying, let’s remember Jesus.    Let’s remember how He bled His love and gave us life.  Remember the cost of your freedom.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Galatians 5:1, what are we to stand fast in, and what are we to avoid?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you walking in freedom in Christ?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Seek the Lord today in prayer and tell Him thank You for Your freedom.  Ask Him to give you the power to walk in this freedom and to keep from getting entangled into the bondage of sin again.

PRAYER FOR TODAY: Father, Thank You for allowing Jesus to die upon the cross for me.  Jesus Thank You for freeing me from the bondage of sin. Empower me today to walk in this freedom and give me the wisdom and discernment to make good choices. In Jesus’ precious name, amen…
