In The Presence of God

You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore. Psalms 16:11 (NKJV)

A few years back, my wife Carol and I were able to go to a marriage retreat to simply rest and receive what God wanted to minister to us through Pastor Jon Courson of Applegate Christian Fellowship.  I have listened to Jon for years on the radio with his searchlight ministries program, but had never met him personally.  Funny thing when you listen to someone for years, or read their writings, you almost feel as though you know them very well.  But then if you actually meet them you can realize very fast they don’t know you—at least until you introduce yourself.

Well, such was the case this weekend with Jon and I, as I was able to introduce myself after one of the sessions and we had a great conversation.  I let him know I had been listening to his teachings for years and thanked him for his faithfulness.  Jon was not only full of grace with me, but as I watched him speak with others, he was faithful to take time and make each person feel special.  The teachings were great that weekend, and it was great to finally meet him personally.

I remember the following Sunday while I was at church praying for the service, I thought about how we were preparing to come before God to give him our praise and worship, and to hear from Him as we read and studied the Scriptures.  I began to think about how different it would be if Jesus were here in the flesh teaching us.  I thought about how blown away we would be to finally meet and be in the physical presence of the One we have been reading and studying about for years.

The fact of the matter is, even though we cannot see God physically right now He is right here with us, and He will always be with us as believers.

For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5 (NKJV)

Here me in this—there will be times throughout our life where God feels very distant, you may even feel all alone, but it won’t change the fact that He is right there with you.   You simply need to draw near to Him and know He is here.  Read the Bible and allow Him to wash you with His Word and let Him speak to you.

Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. James 4:8 (NKJV)

We should always remember God is aware of every detail of our lives. Each of us is special to Him, and He will be faithful to take the time to invest into our lives as we take time to meet with Him.   I think this is a good picture for us to lock into our mind—our being face-to-face with God. We are told we will meet Him one day soon, and today could be the very day this occurs.  Oh what a beautiful thought.  Amen?

STUDY QUESTION: According to the Scriptures contained within this devotional, what could we learn about being in the presence of God?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you giving God your first fruits with respect to taking your valuable time to spend time with Him each day?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Try to start your day with God – even if it means going to bed an hour earlier and getting up an hour earlier to spend time in the Word and praying.

PRAYER FOR TODAY: Father, Thank You for allowing me to come into Your presence and to spend time with You each morning.  Help me to hear Your voice as I read Your Holy Scriptures today.  Teach me Your will for my life and empower me to be what You have called me to be.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…
