Got Power?

God has spoken once, Twice I have heard this: That power belongsto God. Psa. 62:11 (NKJV)

203 was the number assigned to me a few years back for the 2ndannual Patriot Bicycle Ride held in La Quinta California.  This ride helps support many charities to assist our heroes of the military, police, and fire departments.  The plan was set — I would go out on Friday night and pick up my entry packet, jersey and numbers and would have everything I need a full day before the event so I wouldn’t get caught up with all the other participants trying to register early Saturday morning.

At exactly 4:00 am my alarm clock rang out, just one minute after I had awoken — I was eager and ready to ride, as I had chosen the 100-mile course for my riding route.  By 6:00am I was sitting in the local park, just taking in all the sites and sounds of people scurrying around, trying to get last minute stuff accomplished.  Everybody had a plan for the day, and I am sure each person had prepared in the best way they knew how, all with the hope of accomplishing their task at hand.  My departure time was 7:00am sharp.

At about 6:45 the announcement was made and the event started to brim with life, as the band began to finish their practice, and was prepared to usher in the ceremonial events—everything was ready, and the people began to take their places at the start.  It was at this time that I jumped upon my bike and began to stretch my legs.  I hit my electronic shifter but nothing happened — my bike wouldn’t shift.  I immediately knew what the problem was — I had left my battery pack for the electronic shifting mechanism in its charger on my toolbox at home — Doh!

Without a battery my bike would not shift, and it would be stuck in one gear — the wrong gear — a gear that would have been too low in flat areas, leaving me going very slow, and a gear that would have been too high in the mountain sections causing potential knee injury.

While on the long ride home to retrieve my battery I was talking with The Lord — asking Him to show me what He wanted me to learn, in addition to remembering my battery next time.  And this is the message He placed upon my heart.  Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Eph. 6:10 (NKJV)

When we try to go out and accomplish our goals in life — even good goals for The Lord — we must make sure we are prepared by being filled with His Spirit (Eph. 5:18), so we will be empowered to what He is leading us to do.  Often times we can have the best plans and do all the preparing, thinking we are good to go, but we forget to seek The Lord for His power and assistance and we end up striving to get things done in our own power.  And just like in the case of my bike, we will find ourselves missing a key component, or even at the risk of injury to others or ourselves if we continue on our own.

“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.“I am the vine, you arethe branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.  If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw theminto the fire, and they are burned.” John 15:4-6 (NKJV)

What appeared to be a bad mistake was in fact, a great lesson and reminder to me.  Lesson well learned and received, and a fresh battery in place, I went on to ride 101.71 miles over the next 5 hours and 49 minutes.  It was a great day!  Thank You Lord Jesus!

STUDY QUESTION: According to the Scriptures in this devotional, what can we learn about our need for God’s power within our Christian walk, and in our very lives.

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you seeking God’s power every day, or are you trying to complete your tasks in your own limited power?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Seek God to fill you with His wisdom and His Spirit daily. Choose to walk in His power.

PRAYER FOR TODAY: Father, thank You for Your gift of the Holy Spirit.  Help me to know Your perfect will for my every decision, and empower me today so I may walk in your strength to accomplish the work You have for me.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
