A Proper Perspective

A Proper Perspective

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9 (NKJV)

I am often called upon to pray for and to give encouragement to those who are feeling depressed or discouraged.  At the root of every depressed mindset and countenance is an improper thought of the enemy.  Don't get me wrong, bad things can happen to good people and these things can and will cause sorrow in our lives.  But how we choose to look at these things can affect our next series of thoughts - it can determine whether they are good thoughts or negative ones.  Let me explain.

If I thought life was simply a matter of chance, then I would be tempted to be discouraged when something negative happened to me or to those I love.  But if I believe God is in control and everything happening to me is being allowed by Him to shape and form me to be more like Jesus, then I would have a greater peace.  So how we look at our situation can and will make all the difference.

Q:    How can we practically apply this principle to our life today?

We need to get up and seek the Lord in the morning and ask for a fresh filling of His Holy Spirit (Eph. 5:18), and ask Him to give us our protective armor (Eph. 6:11-18) so we are properly equipped to face every challenge.  We must choose to keep our mind on the Word of God.  Once we have done this we can now choose to look at every situation as an opportunity to be used or shaped by God.  Let me give you an example.

I remember having stomach pain about 10 years ago.  No matter how many antacids I took I could not seem to get the pain to go away.  I went to the doctor and he continued to give me stronger medicines but they didn't work.  Finally he ordered a procedure to be done - it would entail placing a camera through the passage of my throat and down into my stomach to see what might be causing the problem.

The next day I went in and proceeded to swallow this miniature camera. I remember praying and asking God to show me clearly what the issue was, and to give the doctors wisdom.  I chose right then to trust God regardless of what I was facing.  As I did this I had a great peace.  A few days later I went in to talk to the doctor about the procedure and as I approached the hospital the Lord placed it upon my heart to give the doctor the book I was reading.  I fought this thought and tried to push it aside, but God had given me a burden and I knew I had to listen.

So as the Doctor came into the room he told me my procedure had came back with positive results and there was nothing wrong with my digestive tract - in fact it looked like a newborn baby.  I replied by asking him how he was doing. I told him the Lord had prompted me to give him a book and then I asked him if I could pray for him.  He told me he really needed this and I could see God had perfectly placed me here for such a time as this.  After we concluded I left his office and the pain in my body went away and has never returned.

I have found God working in the most amazing ways within my life - many I would not have chosen.   I realize now each and every situation I go through is an opportunity.  It is up to me to submit to Him and seek His will for each situation.  If I do this I will have a proper perspective.

Many are the afflictions of the righteous, But the LORD delivers him out of them all. Psalms 34:19 (NKJV)

STUDY QUESTION: According to Psalm 34:19 what can we learn about our trials in life as Christian believers?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to look at every tough time as an opportunity for God to use and shape others as well as yourself?

APPLICATION: Choose to trust in the Lord with all you heart and lean not upon your own understanding.  Seek the Lord for His guidance and be willing to allow Him to use you.

Father, thank You for Your love and mercy.  Thank You for guiding me through the tough situations I face.  Help me to remember this when I am in the middle of tribulation.  In Jesus' precious name, amen...
